Amalgam (silver) Fillings
These are still widely used in the UK, particulalry on the NHS. Amalgam contains mercury and this has led the United Nations Environmental Programme to raise some concerns about its use and its Minamata Convention on Mercury makes it legally binding to reduce amalgam use. In spite of this, no real effort has been made to reduce amalgam use in the UK. Why? Is it because amalgam is cheap and reduces material costs to dental practices using it?
The Minamata convention makes specific provisions to support amalgam use phase
down and yet we dont do so? At Oxley Park Dental Practice we do not readily use amalgam as we believe suitable alternative filling materials are available. Why not discuss this with us at your next apointment?
